2 After this book was completed, the Los Angeles Times [Aug. 2, 2003, A23] printed a story about forty-five supposed cat-mutilations in Colorado. Colorado animal-control officers and the local police had finally concluded that predators, not people, were the culprits, “ending weeks of suspicion that budding psychopaths and devil worshippers were killing the pets.”
